The eighth Annual Nelson Mandela Cup competition in Public Speaking for our International Students took place in the Teacher’s Club on Wednesday 2nd March. Ilir Tashi from Plunket College was the winner of the Nelson Mandela Cup for 2011, who gave a powerful speech on Blood Fueds in Albania.

The competition was presented once again with all his usual flair by Frank Allen. Speakers from Iran, Albania, Mauritius, Romania, Poland, Nigeria and Somalia entertained a full house.

The Honorable Mr Jeremiah Ndou, the South African Ambassador to Ireland, was invited by long time friend of this event, Ken Mc Hugh of SARI Ireland, and he presented the Nelson Mandela Cup adding an extra buzz of excitement to the event. We were all honoured by his presence.

Ilir, who successfully defended this Cup for Plunket College much to the delight of his teacher, Lorna O’Callaghan, had the support of a large fan club of family and college staff.

Runner up was Shokofeh Abrahemayan from Ballsbridge College, a student of Máirín Loftus, who spoke on obesity and raised concerns for overweight men in particular.

In 3rd place was Eduard Brumá from Kylemore College, a student of Jenny O’ Keefe, who entertained us with debunking tall tales.

The Adjudicators were Paula Egan, Mountjoy Education Centre, Finola Butler, CDU and Robert Quinn Coláiste Dhúlaigh.
