The Annual SCC Ladies Gaelic Football Blitz took place at the Terenure C.D.V.E.C. Grounds on Wednesday, October 6, 2010.
The event was organized by Sabena Power (Crumlin College of Further Education) and Phil Challoner (Inchicore College of Further Education).
There were five teams competing for the ‘Rita Clifford Trophy’ this year. Four Further Education Colleges entered the event. They were: Crumlin , Colaiste Ide, Inchicore (who entered two teams), and Ballsbridge. The Ballsbridge team was a very welcome new edition to this year’s blitz. We were delighted to have a new team enter the competition this year and we would encourage all Further Ed. Colleges who were not in attendance this year, to make an extra effort next year to get involved!
The weather on the day was wonderful and all teams seem to enjoy the event.
The eventual finalists were Inchicore College of F.E. (Team 2) and Colaiste Ide (Finglas West).
Our ‘Guest of Honour’ was Cliodhna O’Connor from the Naomh Mearnóg G.A.A. Club. Cliodhna won her long awaited All-Ireland Senior Gaelic Football medal playing in goals for Dublin at Croke Park recently! Cliodhna was warmly welcomed into the Terenure Grounds for our SCC Blitz. The two time ‘All Star’ Dublin Keeper presented the winning medals to the Colaiste Ide team, and the runners- up medals to Inchicore College of F.E. (Team 2). Cliodhna presented the Rita Clifford Trophy to the Colaiste Ide captain, who also won the Most Valuable Player award for her outstanding display of skill on the day. The two referees and Cliodhna chose the MVP.
Thanks to John Madden who teaches at both Inchicore College of F.E. and Ballsbridge College of F.E. for taking photographs of the event. John an Offaly man, had divided loyalties on the day, but, as team manager of the Ballsbridge side, on this occasion, his loyalty lay with the Ballsbridge team.
At the end of the presentation ceremony, a vote of thanks was given to our two referees, as well as, to the Terenure Grounds staff under Nick Fanning. The ground staff had the pitches in excellent condition, marked out, and flagged for the event and were, as always, most helpful. Thanks to our umpires and linesmen also, who were the sports students from Crumlin College of F.E. and Inchicore College of F.E.
Our thanks also to the officers of the SCC executive who gave us every assistance.
Phil Challoner went to great efforts to organize refreshments for all those taking part. These were very much appreciated by the footballers.
So, we now have new S.C.C. Ladies Gaelic Football Champions for 2010 which has put a stop to Inchicore’s bid for ‘3 in a row!’ Inchicore College always produces wonderful teams. They and many other teams will hopefully be back next year!
