CDETB SCC BADMINTON FINALS 2014

BY LOUISE BROWNE

Larkin are left seeing double while Colaiste Eoin win their first Minor title.

COLAISTE EOIN won the Badminton Minor Perpetual Shield for the first time, denying Larkin Community College a possible hat-trick of titles.  Larkin bounced back to win a brace, the Junior and Intermediate titles, at last week’s CDETB Badminton finals at the Champions Avenue College in Dublin’s North Inner City.

Colaiste Eoin’s minor captain Lee Duddy set the tone with an impressive two set win 11-4, 11-7 against Larkin’s Alan Curtis in the boys singles match.  Patrcja Ferdzyn doubled Eoin’s lead with excellent play to beat Larkin’s Nicolletti Flynn in straight sets 11-3, 11-2 in the girls singles match.

The Finglas School claimed the shield on the back of Shane Reilly and Donal Taaffe’s boys doubles success.  Further victories from Aoife Valentine and Elaine Hanlon (girls doubles) and Duddy and Jasmine Thornton (mixed doubles) rounded off a perfect day for Colaiste Eoin.

In a repeat of last year’s Intermediate final the holders Larkin faced Colaiste Dhulaigh.  Once again the hosts with their captain Keith Gifford, Remus Onea, Shauna Mitchell and Denise Hopkins unbeaten throughout the final retained the Shield.

Gifford show off Dhulaigh’s Daryl Maxwell11-3, 11-7 in the boys singles game; Mitchell overcame Aisling Brady 11-5, 11-4 in the girls singles match.  Additional wins from Gifford and Onea (boys doubles) Mitchell and Hopkins (girls doubles) and the mixed double pairing of Mitchell and Ross Dolan saw Larkin successfully defend the title.

Larkin had a tougher route through the Junior final against Marino College with ultimately the best game of the competition sealing the title for the hosts.  Larkin held a slender 2-1 lead going into the boys doubles final.

Marino’s strong duo of Rahan Begum and Tadgh Maguire took the first set 11-6.  Kaiwen Yang and Jonathon Lamoste hit back taking the second set 11-9 before winning the deciding set 11-9 to lift the Shield for Larkin.

Earlier Begum, Marino’s captain, had a comprehensive 11-5, 11-0 win over Jordan Fox in the boys singles match.  Larkin’s captain Matylda Gruszewskai levelled things up with her 11-6, 11-6 success against Marino’s Lauren Carroll in the girls singles game.

Larkin’s girls doubles of Gruszewskai and Naomi Russell beat Marino’s Carroll and Sumana Begum before Carroll and Rahan Begum got the better of Larkin’s Jordan Fox and Vivien Kovacs in the mixed doubles.
