LARKIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE CLAIM A UNIQUE TREBLE AT THE CDETB SCC BASKETBALL FINALS 2016

LARKIN COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S Boys teams had a clean sweep of wins to claim the treble at last week’s CDETB SCC Basketball finals held at the National Basketball Arena.

Larkin proved too strong for their opponents Colaiste Dhulaigh, in the Minor and Intermediate finals, and Kylemore College in the Junior show down.

The Champions Avenue school’s minor team kick started the day with a 15-4 win against the holders Colaiste Dhulaigh, who had beaten Larkin in last year’s final..

Larkin’s captain James Foley was their key player, his back to back baskets in the opening quarter setting the tone. Colaiste Dhulaigh responded through Thomas Fox, who was awarded the MVP, and Delan Dube.

Cain Ledwidge’s free throw and Foley and Scott Hickey’s two pointers gave Larkin a 9-4 half time lead.

Larkin controlled the game in the third and fourth quarters with further scores coming from Ledwidge either side of Hickey’s effort to win the Shield.

Larkin retained the Junior Shield with a comprehensive 47-4 win against Kylemore College. Killian Kearns was at the heart of Larkin’s overall play and was duly awarded the MVP.

Their captain Jaihuang Ren, who topped scored with 20 points, was outstanding along with fine showings from Thomas Murphy, John Lamoste, Russell Roldan and Akilesh Mangona.

Cezar Valentin Murariu and Aaron Byrne scored a basket apiece for Kylemore College.

Larkin got the better of Colaiste Dhulaigh 50-32 in an entertaining Intermediate final. Jiahui Ren was Larkin’s stand out player who fully deserved the MVP accolade.

Andjrez Bobko offensive play was top class with a personal tally of 24. While Larkins captain JR Lamoste, Kaiden Yang and John Roldan all played vital roles.

Dhulaigh’s Sean Nolan and Brandon McCabe kept the Coolock school in touch, both sinking hugh three pointers, before Larkin pulled away in the final quarter to celebrate the treble.

In the girls competition Presentation College, Terenure were double winners retaining the Junior Shield prior to overcoming the reigning champions Larkin Community College in the Intermediate final.

Pres’ proved too strong for Kylemore College in the Junior final winning by 29-10. Pres’ Rhasidat Adeleke walked away with the MVP on the back of an inspiring display, scoring 12 points in the process.

Terenure had led from the outset with Adeleke, Wuraola Busari, Saoirse Hoban, Emma Caster and Helen McGrath excelling around the boards. Kylemore’s Jasmine McEvoy, Nicka Redmond and Katie Ann Dunne put scores on the board.

Pres’ upped the tempo in the third and fourth quarters with scores from Adeleke, Busari, Hoban and Jessica Blanchfield to seal the win for the Southside College.

Pres’ then faced the holders Larkin in the Intermediate show down which the Southside College won 22-4. Niamh Deans was their star player, claiming the MVP, in their victory.

Kamile Kibar, Marianna Pirtac and twin sisters Amy and Amanda Fitzgerald all played their part in Pres’ success.

Larkin, the reigning minor champions, denied Pres’ the treble with a 24-11 victory in a repeat of last year’s finale.

Amran Maxamad, voted MVP, and Rose Mesquita pulled the strings for Larkin combining to score 18 of Larkin’s final points tally. Irina Cepoi and Aoife Cullen were standout players for Pres’.
